4 Things You Should Never Say at a Funeral — And What to Say Instead

Sofia MarinSeptember 4, 2026

Funerals are sacred spaces of raw grief—where well-meaning words can unintentionally wound. In our rush to "fix" pain, we often say things that minimize, compare, or spiritualize someone’s loss. Here’s what not to say—and how to offer true comfort.

🚫 The 4 Phrases to Avoid (And Why They Hurt)

1. "They’re in a better place."

  • Why it stings: Implies their earthly life was "worse," dismissing the mourner’s longing to have their loved one here.
  • What to say instead:

"I’m so sorry. I’m here for you—today and always."

2. "At least they lived a long life."

  • Why it stings: Suggests grief should be "reasonable" based on age. A 90-year-old’s death still leaves a void.
  • What to say instead:

"Their life mattered deeply. Tell me your favorite memory of them."

3. "I know exactly how you feel."
