Marlon Wayans has spoken openly about explaining how his child’s transition forced him to change and grow as a parent.

During an appearance on The Breakfast Club in November 2023, the comedian revealed that his eldest child, formerly as Amai, now goes by Kai. Wayans explained that his upcoming comedy project would explore the experience, but he emphasized that the story was not about Kai’s transition.

Instead, he wanted to talk about his own transformation.

Wayans described moving from a place of limited understanding and denial toward unconditional love and acceptance. He acknowledged that the experience was painful at first and admitted that learning to adjust to Kai’s preferred pronouns was something he was still working through.

Rather than presenting himself as someone who immediately understood everything, Wayans spoke about deeply learning as he went. He said Kai could see that he was making an effort, and that mattered to him as a father.

The comedian also explained why giving his children freedom has become so important to him. For Wayans, being a parent means creating an environment where his children can develop their own identities and feel comfortable being themselves.

He said he wanted his children to be free in their spirit, free in their thoughts and free to live authentically. His comments reflected a message about parents learning alongside their children instead of expecting them to remain exactly as they were imagined.

Wayans has also acknowledged that comedy is part of how he processes difficult experiences. He planned to incorporate his family journey into a future stand-up project, potentially titled Rainbow Child or Skittles. The material would allow him to discuss the emotional challenges while still approaching the subject through the comedic style audiences know him for.
