My high school sweetheart refused to marry me for 11 years, but changed his mind when he found out I'd inherited a lake house — I agreed, but on one condition.
My High School Sweetheart Refused To Marry Me For 11 Years — Then He Learned About My Inheritance
Glenn and I had been together for eleven years.
We started dating in high school, built a life together, and shared almost everything. The one thing we never had was a wedding.
Whenever I brought up marriage, Glenn always found another reason to postpone it.
“We should replace the car first.”
“Why do we need a piece of paper? We already live together.”
I kept explaining that I wasn't asking for an expensive celebration. I simply wanted us to make a real commitment and officially build a family together.
But Glenn never seemed interested.
Then everything changed after my grandfather passed away.
He left me a beautiful lake house.
I was excited and told Glenn about the inheritance, believing my longtime partner would be happy for me.
Instead, I soon discovered what he really thought.
One afternoon, I came home earlier than expected. As I approached the kitchen, I heard Glenn talking on the phone.
I stopped when I heard my name.
He was laughing.
“I'll propose once the house is officially hers,” he said. “I never really planned on marrying her. I was going to leave eventually, but now this changes everything.”
My heart sank.
Then he explained his plan: he wanted to marry me, convince me to put his name on the property, and gain access to something he had never earned.
I stood there in silence, realizing that the man I'd loved for eleven years had been looking at our relationship as an opportunity.
I quietly left before he could see me.
But I didn't confront him.
Instead, I decided to find out just how far he was willing to go.
The Proposal
I returned home and acted as though nothing had happened.
I casually told Glenn that the lake house was now officially mine.
His reaction was almost immediate.
The following evening, he took me out to dinner.
Then, after eleven years of avoiding the subject, he finally got down on one knee.
He proposed.
I smiled.
“Yes,” I told him. “I'll marry you.”
His face lit up.
Then I added:
“But I have one condition.”
His smile slowly faded.
“What condition?”
I looked directly into his eyes.
And the expression on his face was something I'll never forget.
