Zoe Saldaña Has Spent Nearly Two Decades as Neytiri — And Her Avatar Journey Is Still Not Over

When Zoe Saldaña first stepped into the world of Pandora, she probably couldn’t have known just how long the journey would become.

She played Neytiri in James Cameron’s Avatar, released in 2009, and the role eventually became one of the defining characters of her career. More than 16 years later, she is still returning to Pandora.

It Started With One Role

Saldaña created the role of Neytiri in the original Avatar, portraying the fierce Na’vi warrior alongside Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully.

The movie became a worldwide phenomenon, but the story didn’t end there.

Years later, Saldaña returned for Avatar: The Way of Water, followed by Avatar: Fire and Ash.

A Character That Grew With Her

What makes Saldaña’s journey unusual is the amount of time she has spent with the same character.

In a 2024 Variety interview, she discussed how major franchises such as Avatar, Star Trek and Guardians of the Galaxy became deeply connected with important periods of her life, including marriage and starting her family.

She has also spoken about the demanding nature of the Avatar performances, including physical training, archery, martial arts and underwater work for the sequels.

And There Is Still More to Come

Her journey as Neytiri isn’t finished yet.

Saldaña is expected to return for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, currently planned for 2029 and 2031. A 2024 Variety profile noted that the additional sequels would keep her involved with the franchise into her early 50s.

That means a role she began early in her career could remain part of her professional life for more than two decades.

From One Movie to a Lifetime Chapter

For audiences, Neytiri has become one of the most recognizable characters in the Avatar universe.

For Saldaña, the role represents something even bigger: a character she has returned to across different stages of her own life.

She didn’t simply play Neytiri once and move on.

She grew older, built a family and continued developing as an artist while repeatedly returning to the same extraordinary world.

And with more Avatar films ahead, Zoe Saldaña’s journey through Pandora is still far from finished.
